The
Seattle Mariners are a Major League Baseball team based in
Seattle, Washington. They are one of four teams that play in
the Western Division of the American League.
History
of Seattle Mariners
The
Mariners were added to the American League in 1977, and were
for many years’ perennial non-achievers. Owned by a group
that included entertainer Danny Kaye, the Mariners made Kansas
City outfielder Ruppert Jones their first pick in the league
expansion draft and played their first game under manager
Darrell Johnson on April 6, 1977, losing 7-0 to the California
Angels.

The
starting years were not kind for the young Mariners as their
fans continued to be disappointed. The next several years were
spent swapping managers and trying new strategies. Finally the
mid-1980's brought some talented young players: Alvin Davis,
Mark Langston, Matt Young, Harold Reynolds, Phil Bradley, and
Spike Owen. But winning seasons didn't follow.
It
took 15 years and nine managers for the Mariners to finally
record a winning season. Since then the team has settled on a
manager and developed two of the best players of the 1990s.
Finally in 1991 Jim Lefebvre guided Reynolds, Davis, Pete
O'Brien, and youngsters Edgar Martinez, Ken Griffey, Jr., Jay
Buhner, and Randy Johnson to 83 wins and the franchise's first
winning record.
They
have captured their first Division title in the year 1995. In
1996, the Mariners won a club record 86 wins but only managed
to get 2nd place in their division. In the 1997, the Mariners
once again become the Division champion and returned to the
playoffs by winning 90 games. But, unfortunately the 1998 and
1999 season was not so good for them.
With
the 90s over with, the Mariners returned to the playoffs in
2000. The 2001 season was the most successful in Mariner
history thanks to players such as Ichiro Suzuki was the
Mariners won an amazing 116 games! They become Division
champion for the third time in this season.
The
Seattle Mariners have only one Baseball Hall of fame, named as
Gaylord Perry.
Stadium
History of Seattle Mariners
The
stadium for Seattle Mariners for 22 years from 1977 to 1999
was the Kingdome. By the early 1990’s the Mariners began
lobbying to build a new stadium. In 1994, several tiles from
the Kingdome’s roof fell causing the team to play elsewhere.
By 1997, ground was broken for a new ballpark, Safeco Field.
The last Mariners game at the Kingdome was on July 27, 1999.
In
the year 1999, the new ballpark called “Safeco Field” for
the Mariners was built to resemble the great ballparks of
yesteryear. It is open-air and has real grass, and features a
retractable roof that covers the ballpark, but does not
enclose it. Safeco Field also features one of the most
comprehensive scoreboard systems in Major League Baseball,
including 11 electronic displays and an old-fashioned
hand-operated scoreboard in left field.
In
the end, looking further ahead! Will Seattle Mariners would
really return with their incredible performance in the coming
seasons. To gain success and to make happy of their fans
Seattle Mariners have several miles to go.
