History of New York Mets

Established in 1962, the New York Mets played their first match on April 11, 1962 against St. Louis. The first win came to the Mets after they had played 10 games. In their introductory year itself they had lost 120 games, the maximum loses for a team in the 20th century. They were addressed as “Lovable Losers” by their fans at that time with their unconventional style.

The team was in adverse state during 1963 as it ended losing at 51-111. The team recovered from its bad state only when it clinched the World Championship along with Pennant and Division title in 1969.

It was in the year 1973 when Brewers registered victory in NL east by beating the Cincinnati Reds. In the year 1973, they conquered the Pennant title but unfortunately were crushed by the Oakland A’s in the World Series.

Although, they demonstrated better sport no title came to them during 1974-79 & early 80s. With the efforts of Dwight Gooden right-handed pitcher, right fielder Darryl Strawberry and a few other players the team emerged to be one of the strongest teams from mid to late 80s.

The Mets became World Champions in 1986 beating Boston Red Sox in a 7-game series. They also claimed Pennants and Division title in the same year. It was in 1988 that the Mets got a Division title once again. Since that time they weren’t successful in winning any other title except one Pennant in 2000. They also made two post-season appearances in 1999 and 2000.

Some of the names in the Hall of Fame of the New York Mets are Yogi Berra, Gary Carter, Richie Ashburn, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray and Nolan Ryan. The numbers that were retired from the New York Mets were Jackie Robinson #42, Casey Stengel  #37, Tom Seaver #41 and Gil Hodges #14.

Stadium History of New York Mets

Polo Grounds was the home for the New York Mets during 1962 to 1963. In the year 1964, they shifted to the Shea Stadium. April 17, 1964 was the inaugural day of the Shea Stadium. The stadium was considered to be the best stadium for baseball and is a home for the New York Mets till date.

The Shea Stadium is a five-floored ballpark with a capacity to hold 56,000 fans. It’s simple to get to the Shea Stadium by means of the long island railroads, ferry, bus, car and subway. The Stadium comes in the noisy area of La Gaurdia Airport as a result of which there’sa lot of sound pollution all the time.

The Shea Stadium is the only stadium of its kind, as it can be transformed to football stadium from baseball and vice versa. This is done with the help of the motor operated stands that move on the underground passages.
