Boston
Red Sox- Based in Boston, Massachusetts the team was
established in 1893. It was amongst the most dominating teams
of the Eastern Division of National League during the early 20th
century.
History
Of Boston Red Sox
The
team was famous with the names of Boston Sommersets from
1901-1902 and Boston Pilgrims from 1903-1906 before John I.
Taylor named it Red Sox in 1907. Boston Red Sox played its
first game on April 26, 1901.
The
Boston Red Sox became World Champions for the first time in
1903. They won the AL Title in 1904 and were able to secure 3
Pennants before 1907. Years between 1907 & 1918, with
great basemen like CY Young, Tris Speaker & Babe Ruth,
brought 4 World Series Titles and 4 Pennants to the Boston Red
Sox.
Ever
since Babe Ruth left the Boston Red Sox for New York Yankees
in 1919, the team slated downwards and failed to fetch even a
single World Title for 85 years. In fact, 15-year continuous
failure of Red Sox began in 1919. They finished last nine
times whereas they lose more than 90-100 games ten times
during that time period.
In
the late 1930s, Manager Joe Cronin along with veteran stars
Lefty Grove & Jimmie Foxx was successful in improving the
state of the Boston Red Sox. During 1940s, with the inclusion
of Bobby Doerr and Ted Williams, the team began competing with
the Tigers and Yankees for supremacy in American League. The
Red Sox were able to maintain 3rd or even better
slot for ten times during 1938 to 1951 and also grabbed a
Pennant in 1946.

The
mid and late 1950s weren’t very rewarding for the Red Sox as
they weren’t able to reach ahead of the 4th slot.
The Red Sox had to face 8 consecutive losing seasons at a
stretch during the period of 1959 to 1966
Year
1967 brought 8th Pennant for the Boston Red Sox and
ended the losing string. Between 1968 and 1974, they again
miss out the championships. The Pennant and Division Titles
returned to the Red Sox in 1975. Between 1980 and 1999, they
have won the Pennant once and become the Division champion
four times.
Even
their outstanding performance couldn’t get the Boston Red
Sox ahead of second slot during 2000-2001. At last after 85
years in 2004, the Boston Red Sox again won the World
Championship.
The
Boston Red Sox Hall of Famers consists the names of Rick
Ferrell, Dennis Eckersley, Harry Hooper, Buck Harris, Lefty
Grove, Carlton Fisk and Jimmie Foxx whereas the numbers that
have been retired by the Red Sox are Bobby Doerr #1, Joe
Cronin #4, Carlton Fisk #27, Karl Yastrzemski #8, Ted Williams
#9 and Jackie Robinson #42.
Stadium
History Of Boston Red Sox
Inaugurated
on April 20, 1912, Fenway Park
is
the home for the Reds at present. Huntington Avenue Grounds
was the first stadium for the Reds where they spent a decade
i.e. 1901-1911. They left for Fenway Park in 1912.
The
stadium fence known as “Green Monster”, which is 11 meters
tall & 94.5 meters wide, is one of the major highlights of
the Fenway stadium. The stadium is also called the hitter’s
ballpark as the wind flowing leftwards during July &
August automatically throws the ball up to and over the Green
Monster. However, the press box expansion, in 1990, has come
up as an obstacle in the free flow of the wind making the
ballpark less friendly for hitters.
