History
of Cincinnati Reds
Cincinnati
Reds, as we call it now was popular by several other names in
its grand history. Earlier it was known as Cincinnati Redlegs
during 1954 to 1959, Cincinnati Red Stockings during 1876 to
1877 and Cincinnati Reds during 1878 to 1880 & 1890 to
1953.
Cincinnati
Red Stockings was established in the year 1869. The Cincinnati
Red Stockings played their first game on June 1, 1869. The
team recorded a grand victory of 130 non-stop games between
1869-70 before losing to Atlantics.
In
the year 1876, the Red Stockings obtained the licensed
membership of the National League. As the new century began,
the Red Stockings was renamed to Red Sox in order to avoid any
confusion with Boston American League entry. Cincinnati Reds
were able to make it to the World Series four times and also
won the World Championship twice between the years 1876 and
1959.
The
team, though continued to play amazingly well on field,
wasn’t able to get hold of any title in 1960s. Even after
winning 98 games in 1962, the Cincinnati Reds could reach only
to the 3rd position. In the year 1964, the Pennant
title slipped out of their hands by one game.
The
golden era of the Reds could be counted from 1971 to 1980 when
they got 6 division titles and also claimed World Championship
twice in 1975 & 1976. After 1976, though they finished
second 4 times between 1985 and 1989, they have to wait till
1990 to won a championship.
They became World Champions and Division Champions onc
again in the year 1990.
The
years from 1991-2005 weren’t much successful for the
Cincinnati Reds, as they could win just two Division Titles
during this period.
