History
of Colorado Rockies
Colorado
Rockies was named after the Rocky Mountains that pass by
Colorado. The Colorado Rockies came into existence in the year
1991 whereas they played their first game on April 5, 1993 as
National League’s expansion. The match was played against
the Mets at the Shea Stadium, New York.
A
remarkable 65 wins in its very first season made Colorado
Rockies the best ever in National League’s expansion
history. Andres Galarraga was the first baseman of an
expansion team to win a batting title.

In
the year 1993, more than 4,483,350 fans flocked to Mile High
Stadium to watch the Rockies play in their introductory year
season. It was the 52nd home date in 1994 when
their spontaneous performance pulled a record breaking 3
million fans towards the Rockies, which exceeded their own
record of 3 million off 53 dates in 1993. In the second year,
the Rockies fell short of 6˝ games to make it to the peak
position with a record of 53-64.
Year
1995 was the most fruitful year for the Colorado Rockies, as
they clinched National League’s first Wild Card with a
record of 77 wins and 67 losses.
In
1997, Larry Walker wins the award of the Most Valuable Player
of the year for the Colorado Rockies. However, the Colorado
Rockies failed to meet the expectations of their fans for a
long time period between 1996 and 2004, as they failed to make
it to even a single title. The Colorado Rockies couldn’t
reach ahead of the third slot during 1996 to 2004.
Stadium
History of Colorado Rockies
Mile
High Stadium was the first ballpark for the Colorado Rockies.
Colorado Rockies started playing there in 1993 & continued
to play for two years. Colorado Rockies shifted to Coors Field
in 1995, which was the only stadium to open in National League
after the Stade Olympique of Montreal in 1977. Coors Field was
also the only ballpark, second to the Dodger Stadium in 1962,
which was exclusively dedicated to baseball.
The
opening game of the stadium was held on April 26, 1995. The
match was played between Colorado Rockies and New York Mets.
The traditionally constructed fascia of Coors Field
Stadium allows the ballpark to be merged into the heart of
Denver city. The clock hanging at the 20th Blake
Street serves as the rendezvous for the fans before they go
and watch the Colorado Rockies play at Mile High Stadium.
