 Minnesota Twins

Named after the twin cities of Minnesota, Minneapolis and Saint Paul, the Minnesota Twins is amongst the five teams of the Central Division of American League.

History Of Minnesota Twins

The team was popular with the names of Washington Nationals during 1901-1955 & Washington Senators during 1955-1960. They have played their first game on April 26, 1901 as Washington Nationals.

The great Minnesota team then known as the Washington Nationals first posted a winning record in 1912. Though, the Washington Nationals was amongst the most ignored teams during the years 1924 and 1925, prominent players like Babe Ruth of Yankees, Connie Mack of A's and Ty Cobb of Tigers couldn’t stop the Nationals from taking Pennant title away.

From 1901 to 1960, the Washington Nationals team could only manage to win 3 Pennant titles and one World Championship by defeating Giants in 1924. The Senators failed to win over Pittsburgh in the World Series in 1925. They played as losers for more than half of the time they spent at Capitol. The Senators couldn't cross the last slot for ten times and were placed sixth or seventh 23 times.

In 1961 the old Senators, with 60 years experience of playing in the National Capital, moved to Minnesota due to reconstruction work in Metropolitan Stadium and was renamed as Minnesota Twins. They have played their first game on April 11, 1961 as Minnesota Twins. Twins couldn’t taste much success in the first year despite the efforts of great players such as Camilo Pascual, Bob Allison, and Harmon Killebrew. The team stood 7th in the 1961 tournament.

The Twins soon made it to the World Series in 1965. Though, the 1965 World Championship slipped out of the hands of the Twins but the team had been able to make a good rapport with the people of Minnesota.

During the initial ten years of the Twins, the team managed to reach the playoffs thrice. However, it was in the year 1987 that the Twins could win the World Series. The Twins soon conquered their next World Series title in the year 1991. The credit for both the victories goes to manager Tom Kelly and Kirby Puckett, the outfielder of the All-Star.

The Minnesota Twins also have won 7 Division Titles out of which 3 were consecutive from 2002-2004.

Some of the Minnesota Twins Hall of Famers includes the names such as Rod Carew, Steve Carlton, Kirby Puckett and Harmon Killebrew. There were some legendary retired Twins players who had contributed to the game immensely. Some of the retired Twin numbers are Tony Oliva #6, Kent Hrbek #14, Kirby Puckett #34 and Harmon Killebrew #3.

Stadium History of Minnesota Twins

The Minnesota Twins team first played on the American League Park in 1901. They played there for 2 years. In 1903, they shifted to Griffith Stadium where they played for 58 years till 1960. Griffith Stadium was also known as National Park between 1903 and 1920.

Then they move to Metropolitan Stadium that was opened in 1961 and continued to entertain thousands of baseball fans until it closed on September 30, 1981. The stadium had a capacity of holding 18,200 fans, which was further extended to 46,000 later on. The Hubert H Humphrey Metrodome stadium then replaced the Metropolitan Stadium. The Metrodome was designed in downside Minneapolis. This stadium was inaugurated on April 3,1982 and still attracts the Twins. The Metrodome stadium is the only air-supported stadium and third domed facility stadium.

The continuous renovation and expansion of the Metrodome will surely make it number one sooner.
